How to maintain gold vermeil/plated jewelry?

Frequent wear and abrasive cleaning can wear off the gold for gold vermeil or plated jewelries. When you start to see dark spots on your jewelry, don’t stress, we have some tips for dealing with the pesky tarnish problem.

How to preven?

It's better to prevent your jewelry from tarnishing before it appeared. We recommend you to spend 1 mins to remove all body oils and daily grime with a soft & cotton cloth before placing the piece to your jewelry box. Please make sure to store you jewelry in an airtight container when you are not wearing it (use Riyena jewelry box, it's an airtight box to protect your jewelries).

How to clean?

First of all, do not clean your gold vermeil/plated jewelry with liquid cleaner. Instead, clean your jewelry with mild soap and hot water, rinsing thoroughly with hot water and drying immediately with a soft towel. Then use jewelry polishing cloth or any other soft, cotton cloth, or towel to gently buff (or rub) the surface of the jewelry. It might take a while, but don't rub too hard, be very careful to not rub off the layer of gold.

When not to wear?

  • When you are swimming in salt-water or chlorinated pools.
  • When you exercise or sweat profusely (this it to prevent the damage of salts to gold).
  • When preparing acidic food, remove any rings or bracelets made of gold or gold vermeil&plated.

Additional Tips:

  • Before handling any gold vermeil and plated items, be sure to clean your hands of all lotions, water and soil.
  • Wearing gold-plated jewelry should not be worn with perfume or hairspray.
